ArchBang Linux Installation Guide
ArchBang, a lightweight Linux distribution based on ArchLinux with a lightning fast speed is a popular Linux distribution. It comes up with simple and fast i3 window manager. ArchBang has a impressive 9.22/10 rating on distrowatch, a popular Linux distribution watch site. Compared to ArchLinux, ArchBang installation is much easier, thanks to its impressive installation script.
Here, we bring you the simple guide to install ArchBang with screenshots:
- Head over to ArchBang's website and download a latest iso if you have not done it already.
- Make a bootable USB drive with the help of ventoy or any other USB media writer application of your choice. Making bootable USB drive is very easy with ventoy, and you can also add multiple bootable distributions on USB drive. Head over to this article for more help.
- Once you have finished creating a bootable media drive, plug it into your PC and boot from it.
- Press enter to boot into ArchBang Linux. Now you are in a live ArchBang desktop. On the right side of the desktop, you can see some keyboard shortcuts.
- Now press Super Key + I to start installation script.
There are ten steps to complete the installation. First one on the list is partition scheme. Type 1 and then press enter.
- In the partition window, there are four options to select from. Select default scheme by pressing 1 on the keyboard and hit enter. Then select cfdisk option as a partition program or any other from the list. We are going with cfdisk here.
Now, select the drive you want to install ArchBang and gpt lable partioning table. we will create three partitions on it, one for efi boot, one for root and another one for swap partition.
- It's time to partition the drive, as said above we will create three partitions, efi, root and swap. Create 500mb or 1GB new partition on the drive for efi boot. 1GB boot partition is enough even if you plan to multiboot with numerous distros. Next, create new 2-4GB partition for swap and finally make new root partition. You can create more partition if you want separate partition for home etc.
So, I have three drives now, /dev/vda1 for efi boot, /dev/vda2 for swap and /dev/vda3 for root. It could be different for you like sda1, sdb1 etc. Just remember the which one is for efi, swap or root. You will need it next. Do not forget to write the partition scheme before exiting.
- All partition done, now you need to select partition for root, boot and swap. Remember to assign right drive for each one. For me, root drive was /dev/vda3, swap was /deve/vda2 and efi was /dev/vda1.
For root I have chosen btrfs filesystem, you can select ext4 if you want. For swap you don't need to do anything, just assign the drive. Efi boot uses vfat filesystem. - Partition part is finished, and we are back on the main installer wizard screen. Now it's time to install the system. Press 2 and hit enter. It will take a couple of mins.
- Everything else is simple and straightforward from here. Create a hostname, select your location, hardware clock, locale and desktop keyboard layout. Keyboard layout is mostly us for most of the users, but select other if you have different type of layout.
- For bootloader select grub2 and then automatic.
- Create root password and then create user. You did it. Now finish setup and reboot the system. You will be presented with ArchBang grub splash screen on boot and then to console login window. If you want to replace it with GUI login display, follow this article. Login with newly created user and password.
It is all done now you just need to update pacman. Type these commands in terminal:
pac-key
sudo pacman -Syyu
That is all.
